Housing Counselor Day, celebrated on September 26, recognizes the vital role of HUD-certified counselors in helping individuals and families achieve their housing goals. At WIN, these professionals have provided free, one-on-one support for over 24 years, empowering clients to make informed financial decisions and secure long-term homeownership.
“Our goal is to empower clients by providing personalized, step-by-step guidance toward achieving homeownership and keeping their home,” said Hope E. Wilson, WIN’s Operations Director and Housing Program Manager. WIN counselors help clients overcome credit issues, access down payment assistance, and create action plans that lead to successful homeownership. Counselor Kai Jones emphasizes, “The action plan helps them achieve their goal of homeownership. The client has a part, and the counselor has a part. If they get off track, I guide them by helping them help themselves.”
WIN’s support extends beyond the home purchase. Counselors like Tammy Edwards provide critical advice to homeowners facing foreclosure or financial strain. “If you have a life event and think you will not be able to pay your mortgage, call your lender immediately and reach out to a WIN counselor so that we can help you develop a plan,” she advises.
WIN’s services also include foreclosure prevention, budgeting assistance, and reverse mortgage counseling for seniors. Financial Literacy Coordinator Myra Boggs leads the senior home repair IDA programs, helping homeowners save for much-needed repairs through low-interest loans or matching grants.
Certified housing counselors at WIN stay current on the latest housing programs and provide unbiased, trusted advice. Their dedication to empowering families has helped build stronger, more financially stable communities.
