A collage of pictures from Working In Neighborhoods' 2024 Summer Camp. This summer, Working In Neighborhoods (WIN) hosted a camp for 33 kids aged 5-12, all eager to explore new things. This year’s theme was “Building a Sustainable Community,” and over 8 weeks, the kids explored what sustainability means for the environment, economics, and society.

The camp kicked off with a focus on environmental sustainability. The children learned about the importance of preserving our planet and the steps they can take to contribute. They visited COSI, where hands-on science exhibits helped them understand how everyday actions impact the environment. Camp counselor, Constance Evans, enjoyed guiding the kids through COSI’s interactive displays, showing them how science plays a crucial role in our daily lives.

As camp progressed, the focus shifted to economic sustainability. WIN Partner, First Financial Bank provided a series of classes including one where they brought mint seeds to symbolize how small savings can grow over time, just like plants. The kids learned about budgeting, saving, and the value of education. The hands-on activities, especially those involving money management, were a big hit, with many kids saying they now have a better understanding of how to manage finances for a sustainable future.

The final segment of the camp was dedicated to social sustainability. The campers learned about how communities can work together to meet various needs and wants. They brainstormed ideas for community initiatives. When one student said they had nothing to donate, Evans reminded them that “Knowledge is always a gift to pass on to people.”

During camp’s final week the students created a model village, where each was responsible for designing and building structures that would make their town sustainable. “The kids used critical thinking to decide what their town needed and how they could achieve near-net-zero energy use,” said Evans. While some ideas, like building a theme park, had to be reconsidered, the project was a success and a fun way to tie all the lessons together.

The camp wasn’t just about learning—it was also about adventure! They were thrilled by the visits to COSI, Scene 75 and Entertrainment Junction, and the opportunity to see animals up close when Cincinnati Museum Center and Newport Aquarium brought them to WIN’s campus.

Summer camp was a success.  The kids walked away with a deeper understanding of sustainability and a newfound appreciation for the world around them. Evans is already looking forward to planning next year’s camp and the new adventures it will bring!
